Hundreds tumbled over the edge to their death before the blanket-waving cowboys could divert their charge and calm the herd. On a New Mexico drive in 1877, almost one thousand cattle were lost in a stampede. The early morning cry of a donkey sent the herd running. The cowboys quickly mounted their horses and raced off to try to stop the stampede. ” Lucky for him, another cowboy dashed out to save him before he was trampled to death. The cattle stampeded right over a bank into the Pecos River, where nearly a thousand drowned.
